Ravi assures release of eight Indians in Australia

NEDUMBASSERY: Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi yesterday said that his ministry has taken initiative for the release of eight Indian workers who were undergoing miseries in St.Petersburg, Russia.

The workers were reportedly cheated by a 'fraud' travel agent in Kerala, he told mediapersons here.

They were expected to return next week, he said.

He said arrangements were made for providing exit visa to the workers who were willing to return to India.

Ravi said the Civil Aviation minister had assured him that the workers would be provided with free travel in an Airlines in Russia.

Director AK Lohithadas passes away

Kochi: Noted Malayalam movie director A K Lohithadas died at a private hospital at Kochi here on Sunday. He died at Lissy Hospital at 11 am due to heart attack . Lohithadas was in Kochi to attend the general body meeting of AMMA, was later admitted to hospital due to physical discomfort.

Lohithadas is a prolific screenwriter and director who is known for his rich, detailed, and realistic screenplays. He showed an initial interest was in short-stories, but failed to make a mark in that genre. He soon moved into Malayalam theater in 1986 when his debut script was accepted for the stage by the legendary theater personality Thoppil Bhasi. Bhasi's CPI party backed drama troupe, the highly successful 'Kerala People's Arts Club', produced the play, leading to a state award for Lohithadas.

Fresh with the play's commercial and critical success, Lohithadas moved to Malayalam Cinema by writing for director Sibi Malayil. His first movie screenplay Thaniavarthanam was directed by Malayil and went on to be a success. The Sibi Malayil-Lohithadas combination would later produce several memorable Malayalam movies.

Lohithdas movies are well known for its deep and realistic characterization and are often grim depiction of contemporary Kerala life. In spite of its serious subjects, they have been highly successful in the state. His movies lay less emphasis on plot or commercial gimmicks and, instead, display a more character-oriented approach. He is a prolific writer, often writing nearly four screenplays a year. He turned director with his critically acclaimed 1997 film Bhoothakannadi (The Magnifying Glass).

The film Bhoothakannadi won him the 45th National Film Award for Best film in 1997. Other awards inlcude Kerala State Film Award for Best Story - Thaniyavarthanam, 1987, Kerala State Film Award for Best Film - Bhoothakannadi (1997) , Tamil Nadu State Film Award for 2nd Best Film and hordes of other awards

Temples Of Kerala

A temple is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual activities, such as prayer and sacrifice, or analogous rites is called Mandir or Kovil (Tamil) or Devasthanam or Dega (Nepal Bhasa) or Ambalam (Malayalam) or other words in different Indian languages. It is usually dedicated to a primary deity called the presiding deity, and other deities associated with the main deity. Most practicing Hindus maintain a 'mandir' in their homes for daily worship.
Hindu Festivals

Kerala is a land of temples with numerous temples. You can enjoy colourful festivals - Aarat and Pooram - with grand elephant processions.

Arattu (holy bath) is ritual connected with the closing of a festival. The idols of deities are carried in a procession to the river for the holy bath. The purified idols are then escorted back to the temple accompanied by a grand elephant pageant, 'panchavadyam', 'nadaswaram' and 'chendamelam'.

The major Hindu pilgrim centres in Kerala are Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple, Thrissur Vadakkum Natha temple, Sabarimala temple

Afridi wants to captain Pakistan

London, June 21 : Pakistan's star all-rounder Shahid Afridi wants to lead his country in international cricket before retiring from the game.

Afridi, the chief architect of Pakistan's impressive World Twenty20 campaign here in England
, Sunday said it is his greatest wish to captain Pakistan before saying goodbye to international cricket.

The flamboyant Afridi is one of the senior players in the Pakistan team but is not considered as a future captain amidst the presence of current skipper Younis Khan and vice-captain Misbah-ul-Haq.

'It would be great if I get a chance to lead Pakistan before retiring,' said Afridi, who has impressed both with the bat and ball in the World Twenty20.

However, Afridi made it clear that he has no problems with Younis. 'Younis is a great captain and a good leader,' he said. 'He has given me and other players a lot of confidence.'

Afridi, 29, according to some experts could be a good choice to captain Pakistan in Twenty20 internationals.

Pakistan beat SA to enter final

Pakistan beat ‘eternal chokers’ South Africa by seven runs to reach the ICC World Twenty20 final.

South Africa again fail to make it to the title-clash as they went down to Pakistan by just seven runs in the ICC World T20 semi-final.

Just when Jacques Kallis was looking set to see South Africa to safety, Saeed Ajmal struck to cut short the Protean’s brilliant innings.

Shoaib Malik made no mistake in catching Jacques Kallis off Saeed Ajmal to send the South African packing.

Earlier, Afridi disturbed AB de Villiers stumps with ease after the Pakistan all-rounder dismissed Herschelle Gibbs in his earlier over.

Gibbs had added just five runs to SA board when Afridi showed him the way back.

After Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis started South Africa’s 150-run chase against Pakistan on a cautious note, Mohammad Aamer caught Smith off his own bowling to scalp up the first Protean wicket.

After JP Duminy got the big one for South Africa in Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, and RE van der Merwe sent Shoaib Malik packing, skipper Younis Khan and Abdul Razzaq held it out till the end to post 149/4.

Malik contributed 34 to his side’s cause before Johan Botha caught him off Van der Merwe.

South Africa’s Wayne Parnell dealt Pakistan the first blow as he accounted for Shahzaib Hasan. Dale Steyn followed with Kamran Akmal.

Hasan was yet to put a mark against his name when Wayne Parnell lured him to set up a brilliant catch for RE van der Merwe.

Akmal was, meanwhile, looking in good stead and hitting quite a few big ones. But just after he hit Dale Steyn for a six the Protean got his revenge by getting him caught by Albie Morkel on the very next ball.

Shahid Afridi, meanwhile, was looking in a demolition mode. The Pakistan dasher was hitting the Protean attack all round the ground.

JP Duminy bowled a slower one to get Afridi caught by AB de Villiers after he made a quick 51.

Pakistan skipper Younis Khan called right and decided to bat first against South Africa in the first ICC World T20 semi-final at Trent Bridge.

South Africa have reinvented themselves as a T20 team for all seasons and insist their reputation as ‘chokers’ is history.

Price rise forces hotels to hike food prices

Thiruvananthapuram, Friday 19 June 2009: This bit on inflation you would find tough to digest. Unable to hold on to the price line amid escalating costs, many medium-to-large restaurants plan to make a price hike.

Sales at restaurants and hotels have dipped by 10-15 % since inflation started to gallop. Now, with the proposed menu card rate hike, your family outings to restaurants will become more expensive. This may dissuade consumers considering that household expenditures are already bursting at the seams.

Kerala State Hotel and Restaurant Association state president G Sudheer kumar said: “Rising inflation has put fear in people’s minds. They are curtailing expenses on restaurants and hotels. While this has resulted in lower sales, the industry is also grappling with rising costs. Since quality cannot be compromised upon, the industry is looking at a rate hike.”

Abhaya case:CBI fails to submit chargesheet

Thiruvananthapuram, Friday 19 June 2009: Even after arresting two priests and one nun in connection with the Abhaya case, the CBI has not been able to present the chargesheet. The three had been arrested on grounds that there were clear evidences against them. They were kept in the custody for 42 days.

Although there were laid down rules that an accused should be arrested only after collecting valid evidences against him and the charge sheet should be presented within 90 days from the day of arrest, none of this rule has been followed in this case.

The delay from the part of the CBI to submit a chargesheet validates the allegation that the arrest was done not on evidences but on some other intentions.

The church has cooperated with all kinds of investigation undertaken in this case all these years by various agencies. But still no agency could bring out anything other than mere speculations and the church sees the entire ordeal as plan to tarnish the image of the church in public.

Talking to reporters in the district, he said the LDF suffered a major setback in the polls due to their tie-up with communal parties like the PDP. New Delhi, Friday, June 19, 2009: Giving a clean chit to Former Electricity Minister G Karthikeyan under UDF Government the CBI in its chargesheet has clearly depicted CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and two other former government officials for plotting in the multi crore scam.

Vizhinjam port project likely to get delayed further

Thiruvananthapuram, June 19 : Mumbai-based Zoom Developers, whose bid for the proposed Rupees 53.48-billion port at Vizhinjam has been rejected, Friday said it would challenge the decision in court.

"The chief minister (V.S. Achuthanandan) and the port minister (M. Vijayakumar) have taken a negative stand towards us all through the past three years. We have no other option but to take the state government to the court again," Zoom chief executive Anil Thampi said.

The company's decision would lead to a protracted legal battle between the state government and the bidder, resulting in a further delay in the implementation of the project, officials said.

The company had approached the Supreme Court earlier this year challenging the state government's decision to award the port contract to the Hyderabad-based Lanco Infrastructure.

Following a Supreme Court directive, the state government April 29 asked the bid evaluation committee to re-assess Zoom's tender for the project.

However, the committee headed by Chief Secretary Neela Gangadharan rejected the bid Thursday, saying it did not fetch the minimum points required to get qualified.

The awarding of the contract to Lanco had run into trouble after the Congress-led opposition alleged that Zoom was deliberately kept out, despite it offering to pay the government Rs.447 crore after 10 years of operations, as compared to Lanco, which offered Rs.115 crore.

The Vizhinjam port project is being developed under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme and will be handed over to the state government after 30 years. It will be built over 150 acres with no displacement of local fishermen, officials said.

With the natural depth at 24 metres, one of the deepest in the world, the port needs no dredging. It will be located close to a busy international shipping
route, and handle 4.1 million containers annually.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday filed a chargesheet against Communist Party of India - Marxist Kerala [Images] Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan in a graft case.

After receiving Governor R S Gavai's sanction four days ago to prosecute 69-year-old Vijayan, overruling the state cabinet recommendation, the CBI filed the 11-page chargesheet in a special court in Kochi, naming Vijayan and eight others as accused in the case.

Vijayan, the first CPI-M [Images] politburo member to face prosecution for alleged corruption, has been charged under Indian Penal Code sections 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) and section 13 (1) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act in the case, regarding award of contracts to Canadian company SNC-Lavalin for renovating three hydro power projects in 1998 when he was the power minister in the E K Nayanar [Images] government.

The investigating agency had also sought permission from the Governor to prosecute the former minister. The chargesheet has been filed hardly four days after receiving the Governor's sanction.

Indian cricket fans must learn to lose: Tendulkar

Chennai: The country’s cricket-crazy fans are putting more pressure on the team with their emotional reaction to defeat and need to get behind the players in tough times, said batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

Surprise winners of the Twenty20 World Cup two years ago, India were installed as one of the favourites to repeat the triumph this time but a three-run loss to England consigned them to a second straight Super Eights defeat, leaving them with no chance of reaching the semis.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni bore the brunt of fan anger and security at his home in Ranchi had to be beefed up after scores of fans burnt his effigy, shouted slogans and accused him of underestimating England in a must-win game. India went on to lose three Super Eights games in a row and were dumped out of the tournament on Sunday.

"I feel there is very high emotion among the people when they react. But do these reactions help us to play better? Not really," Tendulkar was quoted as telling an English news channel..

"These actually put more pressure on the players. We have got to be mature and be with the team," he was quoted as telling an English news channel.

"No one can change the past but always can learn from it and do better in future. I think we should react to the success and failures with lot of responsibility and balance. If we do that it becomes easier for everyone.

"I am also disappointed along with the nation. I am sure that the guys planned and tried well, but things sometimes don't click," added Tendulkar, who does not play in Twenty20 internationals.

Kerala's IT Dreams shattered! Smart city Kochi project has died.

So thats it.Kerala again proved that it is as an investor-hostile state and the educated youths of Kerala can again start moving outside Kerala or other countries in search of jobs.
The proposed Smart City was expected to generate direct employment for 80,000 people and provide indirect employment to another 20,000 people.
The 'red tape' development style of Kerala has made the Dubai based Smart City to exit the Kerala project. They insisted on 12 per cent of the land would be given for free for the project. The government could not take a positive step towards that demand and the results was as expected.
V S Achuthanandan had laid the foundation stone of the Smart City project on November 16, 2007.This project would have changed the face of Kerala and aspirations of millions of Malayalis working abroad.Because of the lack sufficient opportunities in Kerala Majority of techies moved to Bangalore or elsewhere. The small companies of Trivandrum Technopark failed to attract techies in terms of Salary and access to global companies.
Many of them hoped to comeback to Kerala once the Smart city become a reality.

Kerala proved it again.Kerala and its corrupt and ant-development political setup again thrashed the dreams of thousands of NRKs as well as the students studying across the engineering colleges of Kerala.
The politicians and their Godfathers in Kerala need trade unions to spread it's wings in software companies thus making the companies to think twice before doing investments in Kerala.
